Silvia Farè obtained her Master of Science degree in Management and Industrial Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in July 1994. In May 1998, she earned her PhD in Biomaterials (X cycle) at Politecnico di Milano, with a thesis investigating the mechanisms of in vitro oxidative degradation of medical-grade polyurethanes. She then obtained a post-doctoral research fellowship (1998–1999) within the project “Third Generation Artificial Heart” and served as a Research Assistant at the Bioengineering Department of Politecnico di Milano from 1999 to 2003.

From 2005 to 2014, she was Assistant Professor first at the Bioengineering Department (2005–2012) and then at the Department of Chemistry, Materials, and Chemical Engineering “G. Natta” (2013–2014) at Politecnico di Milano. From December 2014 to March 2021, she was Associate Professor of Industrial Bioengineering at the same department, and since April 2021 she has been Full Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Materials, and Chemical Engineering “G. Natta,” Politecnico di Milano.

Her international experience includes research periods as a visiting Master’s and PhD student at the Joint Research Centre, Institute for Advanced Materials, Ispra (VA), Italy (1993–1996), and as a visiting PhD student at Université Laval and the Quebec Biomaterials Institute, Quebec, Canada (March–September 1996 and January–March 1997). She has been an active member of national and international scientific communities. Since 2012, she has served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Biomaterials and Functional Materials (Sage).

In 2005, she was elected to the Council of the Italian Society for Biomaterials (SIB), where she served as Treasurer, and she is currently the President of SIB. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Council of the European Society for Biomaterials, serving as Treasurer for four years. In 2024, she was appointed to the Council of the International Society for Biofabrication (ISBF).

From 2001 to the present, Silvia Farè has been responsible for various undergraduate and graduate courses in biomaterials and regenerative medicine within the Biomedical Engineering program at Politecnico di Milano. She is the author or co-author of over one hundred national and international scientific publications in the field of materials science, with a particular focus on biomaterials and regenerative medicine. According to Scopus, she has published over 154 papers, with an H-index of 41.
